Public Support for MET Stronger Than Ever: Support Now Reaches 80% According to Latest Léger Survey

Vignette de communiqué

Longueuil, June 2, 2026 – At just a few weeks away from the opening of its new passenger terminal, MET – Montreal Metropolitan Airport welcomes the results of a survey conducted by Léger Marketing between April 28 and May 5, 2026, among 701 residents of Montreal’s South Shore. The findings confirm the strong social acceptability of the project and its importance to the region’s economic development and mobility.

The survey’s key finding reveals an 80% level of support for the MET project, representing a 3% increase compared to the first study conducted in 2024, at the very beginning of the project. Among the main reasons cited by respondents for their support, 28% mentioned MET’s contribution to relieving congestion at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport, 21% highlighted its proximity to their home, and 15% pointed to the ease of access to the new airport. The project’s anticipated economic benefits are also widely recognized. In fact, 90% of respondents believe MET will help stimulate the South Shore economy, while 89% believe it will support economic development across the regions of Quebec.

The survey also indicates that community engagement efforts have been successful. As such, 80% of respondents are confident that the project is being carried out with the involvement of local elected officials, and 89% view MET as an asset for South Shore residents. “We are very encouraged to see that the ongoing consultation and co-development efforts carried out with elected officials and regional stakeholders are recognized and appreciated by the public. This collaborative approach will remain central as we enter a new phase in MET’s development,” said Mr. Simon-Pierre Diamond, Vice President, Corporate Affairs and Legal Affairs at MET.

Complementary, Not Competitive

When asked about the relationship between MET and Montréal-Trudeau International Airport, respondents largely rejected the notion that the two airports are competitors. In fact, 81% believe MET will play a complementary role to YUL.

A view shared by MET’s leadership. “By developing an airport designed for single-aisle aircraft and direct flights, we are serving a different market segment than YUL, whose primary mission is to act as a major connecting hub and accommodate wide-body aircraft operations. We firmly believe that we are complementary partners in serving the Greater Montreal air transportation market,” said Mr. Diamond.

Noise Management Remains a Priority

The survey also highlights that residents’ primary concern remains the potential impact on the local noise environment. In response, MET continues to implement concrete measures as part of its Noise Management Plan, including maintaining its prohibition on overnight commercial flights. It is worth noting that an independent study conducted by industry experts concluded that, due to new noise management procedures and Porter Airlines’ use of next-generation single-aisle aircraft, the airport’s overall acoustic footprint is expected to decrease by approximately 20% compared to previous conditions.

In addition, and in line with its commitments, MET installed fine particulate matter sensors this spring as part of its air quality monitoring and management strategy around the airport. Implemented in collaboration with the Montérégie Public Health Department and engineering consulting firm AtkinsRéalis, this initiative represents a first step in the airport’s ongoing air quality monitoring efforts.

The first commercial flights departing from MET – Montreal Metropolitan Airport are scheduled to begin on Monday, June 15.
