NATURE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POSITION

As an Airport Maintenance Specialist, you will be required to perform various duties throughout the airport site to ensure that the airfield remains safe and compliant with Transport Canada standards.

The position involves operating the following motorized vehicles, or other vehicles in the same category: trucks equipped with snowplows and runway sweepers, abrasive spreader trucks, snow blowers, agricultural tractors, front-end loaders, and/or other heavy or specialized vehicles.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Air Operations Manager. The Airport Maintenance Specialist is primarily responsible for safely operating the vehicle assigned to them and carrying out various assigned duties efficiently and in accordance with established procedures. The employee is responsible for ensuring that their vehicle is in proper working condition and for performing minor maintenance. They must also keep the vehicle in a satisfactory state of cleanliness, particularly the body, windows, headlights, and lights. Work is monitored through reports or log sheets completed by the employee and/or through inspections conducted by a senior employee.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES PERFORMED

• Ensures that assigned vehicles are in good working condition and performs minor maintenance; checks the battery, radiator, headlights, signal lights, brakes, and tires; reports any defects to their supervisor; adds oil as required and refuels the vehicle; washes the vehicle and ensures that it is kept clean.

• Clears snow from airport paved surfaces.

• Uses a truck equipped with an airport sweeper to clear snow and ice from paved surfaces.

• Applies de-icing products to runways and taxiways.

• May be required to operate other types of heavy vehicles.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Good knowledge of:

• the operation and handling of the relevant motorized vehicles, including their routine maintenance, mechanical systems, capabilities, and limitations; and

• applicable safety procedures and precautions.

Skills and abilities:

• ability to operate the relevant motorized vehicles safely and responsibly and to use them efficiently;

• ability to maintain vehicles in good working order and a satisfactory state of cleanliness, and to perform minor adjustments as required;

• tact and courtesy; and

• strong teamwork skills.

Must hold a valid driver’s licence (Class 1 or Class 3 is a significant asset).

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Ability to read, write, and speak French.

Experience:

• demonstrated ability to operate the relevant motorized vehicles; and

• previous experience working on an airport site and possession of a valid AVOP (Airside Vehicle Operator’s Permit) are significant assets.
